When temperatures drop below freezing for long periods of time, it's important to prevent cracked or busted pipes. When water freezes it expands which puts a lot of pressure on water lines which can cause cracks, cause them to burst, and cause water to be where you don't want it. To prevent this, drip faucets inside, open cabinet doors under sinks, flush toilets regularly, insulate all exposed pipe, and cover all exposed outdoor faucets. Keep in mind hoses and lines for livestock water tanks and insulate those as well. You will need to keep pool pumps running to keep water moving and prevent those from freezing.
If you have a line freeze or lose water you can check around for the cause. You can use a heat lamp on an outdoor faucet to help it thaw. You can use a heat lamp on water lines that are frozen but make sure to not leave it unattended because it can cause a fire.
